The Projekt DEAL agreement with Wiley and Springer Nature proves to be a sustainable solution for both parties. However, Elsevier have not agreed to this concept. Other groups are putting pressure on Elsevier to change their subscription model. In the end, Wiley would not have entered such an agreement if it meant increasing losses. This, however, is only speculation. Open Access Rooted in an Expensive Pay to Publish Idea. The far-reaching transformative impact of the new deal will only be reached if such PAR agreements will become more widely adopted.

The agreement between Projekt DEAL institutions and Wiley is part of a nationally coordinated strategy to enable a large scale transition of today's scholarly journals to open access. As of 2019, researchers from Projekt DEAL institutions can now read all Wiley journals and publish their own primary research and review articles open access, retaining copyright of their works.

DEAL is not the only group that has had better dealings with Wiley than Elsevier. Over the last few months, consortia of research institutions in Hungary and Norway have announced successful deals with Wiley while, around the same time, stating that they were letting their Elsevier contracts lapse due to stagnant negotiations.
