Gerda Lerner (1920-2013) was born into a middle-class Jewish family in Vienna. As a fourteen-year-old girl, she joined the underground movement against the Nazis and was put in prison at sixteen. She fled Austria in 1939 and survived as a semi-skilled worker in New York for a few years before she married the American filmmaker Carl Lerner.
